If you are a homeowner with a basement, you may be familiar with all the problems you can have with water getting into it. These are 5 things you should to do prevent water from getting in and causing damage.

1. Have Your Foundation Inspected

The best way to prevent water from getting into a basement is to have the foundation inspected by a professional. They will be able to identify weak concrete, structural instabilities, and other issues that can lead to unwanted water inside. They can help come up with a plan to repair these problems before they get worse, and avoid a much more costly repair down the road.

2. Repair Existing Waterproofing.

You may have had waterproofing done in the past, but it is not guaranteed to hold up forever. Water will cause pressure to build up around your foundation, which can eventually lead to a leak. You may notice problems in the form of moisture getting inside the home where utility lines enter your basement, which will get worse over time. Address necessary repairs early to prevent major damage from occurring.

3. Improve The Grading Surrounding Your Home

It is never good if water collects against your home's foundation, which is how water pressure forms and causes leaks in the foundation walls. One way you can combat this problem is by improving the grading that surrounds your home. 4. Have A Drainage System Installed

Even if you have improved the grading to divert rainwater away from the foundation, water will still find a way to get to the foundation walls. A french drainage system uses pipes and gravel to let the water drain below the foundation and then flow away from the house. It will prevent the water pressure from building up against the walls of the foundation.

5. Have A Sump Pump Installed

Even if you take other precautions, it's possible to still get water inside your basement. A sump pump is a way to give the water an area to go to, where it can safely be pumped away from your home.
